Our Curriculum

Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage covers the ages of children in pre-school and Reception. The Early Learning goals cover the same aspects as in the National Curriculum but they are taught in a way that emphasises playing, talking and children’s developing awareness of the world. The Curriculum is structured to meet the needs of all the children and allows children to learn at their own pace. This prepares children for the more formal stage of the National Curriculum at Year 1.

The National Curriculum

The National Curriculum introduced in the Education Act 1988 comprises the core subjects of Mathematics, English and Science. These are the subjects basic to the whole curriculum and on which most time will be spent. It also includes the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Design and Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Music, Art and Physical Education. Religious Education and Health Education are also to be taught in the remaining time.

Programmes of Study reflect attainment targets and set out the minimum content which pupils are to be taught at various stages within the core and foundation subjects. Prescribed levels of attainment establish the knowledge, skills and understanding the pupils should normally be expected to have at the ages of seven and eleven.

The object of the exercise is to enable a pupil’s progress to be measured against national standards, and give children, teachers, and parents a clear idea of what is expected within the framework of Key Stages. We also teach the Foundation Stage in Reception and teach upon a cross curricular basis so that our youngest learners can use their skills across the whole curriculum.

Across the whole school we teach in a cross curricular manner and our philosophy is to teach upon a topic basis. Our aim is to give our pupils great enthusiasm and the time to investigate new learning. We enrich our activities with a range of themed days and weeks to enhance our learning experiences.

Religious education

Children attend acts of worship and study religious education, but it is open to parents to request that their child should be wholly or partly excused from either or both of these activities. Any such request should be made to the Head Teacher. Religious Education in the County maintained and controlled schools is given in accordance with a syllabus agreed by the County Authority.

In addition to this, a Church Representative comes into school fortnightly to take a school assembly. Assemblies are held regularly and these may have a religious, social or moral theme.

Although we are a County Primary School, we are proud of the relationship that we have with the Churches in Colyton.

Special Educational Needs

The School’s Assessment and diagnostic policy provides clear guidance for diagnosing and referring children with learning problems. Most children are catered for within the context of the class situation and the school has a teacher employed 1 ½ days per week for Special Needs. The school also operates a ‘Withdrawal’ system for those needing extra help on a 1:1 basis.

The Education Authority’s Psychological and Advisory Service provide on-going back-up to the school.

Sex Education

It is the policy of the school that sex education should form part of the secular curriculum. The delivery of this area of the curriculum shall be at a level appropriate to the child’s age, interest and ability to understand.

Home Learning

Home learning is used to reinforce, practice or revise work done in school.

When your child starts at Colyton we will issue them with a ‘Home School Book’. The purpose of this book is as follows:

  • To develop improved home-school communication: to provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to communicate with each other regarding homework matters.
  • To clearly identify and explain all homework that is set, so that teachers’ expectations are made very clear.
  • To encourage children to read at home, both alone and with their parents and to provide parents with prompts, to support them in working with their child.

As Parents we ask you to:

  • Encourage your child to complete their homework and to their best.
  • Praise your child when they have completed their homework well.
  • Contact us if any aspect of homework is causing you concern.
  • Make a comment in this book every week, stating briefly what your child has done and how he/she got on with it.

Reading is a major focus throughout the school and children will be required to read independently or to an adult at least four times a week. This homework diary can be used to record these reading sessions and will also serve as a means of communication between parents and teachers. As a child moves through the school, there is a clear progression in the amount of time that they will spend doing homework.

Reading Scheme

We use a variety of schemes, from various publishers e.g. Oxford Reading Tree, Story Chest, Collins Big Cat  and Code X. These are grouped into coloured bands based upon the challenge they offer to the children.

Extra Curricular Activities

Clubs and special courses are arranged at various times for most children.  We are proud of the range of activities we run.  At present these include Football, netball, cricket/rounders (in Summer) and tuition for the Flute, Clarinet, Brass, Guitar, Recorder and Keyboard.
