Round Up and Preview

Friday 5th July

Another lovely week in year 2. I can’t believe how quickly this summer term is going. Transition is upon us and we are busy preparing the children for their move to year 3 and KS2.

In writing, we have used all of our growing grammar knowledge to retell the story of ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’. I’m really proud of the application of skills in children’s writing! We have also been creative in changing the setting of the story to the seaside and instead of a sandwich, children have been brainstorming how to make an ice-cream disgusting. The children will be planning and writing their own story as their ‘application task’ in the next few weeks. Asking your children about their story ideas and getting them to retell it to you verbally will support them in internalising their story ready for writing.

In maths, we have stared our learning sequence on ‘Position and Direction’. We have started by learning to describe movement using directional language and have found lots of practical ways to practice this involving pirates and treasure! The children also took part in lots of maths sessions during our teacher interviews this week. Candidates were asked to plan and teach a year 2 maths session and all feedback to me how wonderful the class were. I was very proud.

We have been busy this week planning our class stall for the Summer Fete next week. The children have been very creative and we have decided that our stalls will all be inspired by Roald Dahl. We are planning a ‘Find the Golden Ticket’ game as well as a ‘Guess how many Alfies there are’ game but also planning a stall selling Matilda’s second hand books and a BFG dream jars.
We have already made a start but we do need some help. If you have any second hand books at home that you can donate to our stall we would be really grateful. We also want to collect as many glass jars (jam, pasta sauce etc) as possible so that we can turn them into dream jars. Please send children into school with anything you can donate Monday. Thank you!

Friday 28th June

Finally some June weather to make it feel like the summer term! The class have been really sensible in the heat this week. Please remember to send children into school with sun hats while this good weather continues. They must have a water bottle in school which can be refilled throughout the day. Can I also ask that sun cream bottles are named and children bring them into the classroom rather than leaving them in their bags in the cloakroom.

In English this week we have been focusing on punctuation: revisiting the function of a comma in a list and learning about punctuating direct speech.  Next week we will also be using what we have learnt so far to re-write the story in our own words before innovating the text to add our own ideas. The aim is to create some super stories that link to our topic by including a beach setting.

In maths, we have learnt to calculate and compare durations of time. Next week we will start our learning sequence on ‘Position and Direction’. To get a head start, it would be great to consolidate left and right at home and practice clockwise and anti-clockwise as well as quarter, half and three quarter turns.

In our Topic sessions, the children have been learning about seaside holidays 100 years ago and have also drawn and painted some superb portraits inspired by our class author Picasso.
We have met all the characters in Roald Dalh’s ‘Matilda’ now. Unsurprisingly, the children haven’t warmed to Miss Trunchbull! The class really enjoyed hearing about all the tricks Matilda played on her parents and so we will be responding to our reading next week by imagining our own tricks that Matilda could play on the rotten adults around her.

Friday 21st June

It’s been another wet week this week…but that hasn’t stopped us in Class C.

In English we have been creating our own disgusting sandwiches based on ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ story.  We have re-visited noun phrases to write the descriptions of our sandwiches and the children excelled at making them pretty revolting! We have also been rehearsing our sentence writing skills to consolidate the basics but have begun learning about prepositions and prepositional phrases to describe where something is in relation to something else. We have also been editing writing to make sure it is written in the consistent tense. Next week we will be focusing on punctuation: revisiting the function of a comma in a list and learning about punctuating direct speech.  We will also be using what we have learnt so far to re-write the story in our own words.

In maths, we continue to look at time. Telling the time to 5 minute intervals is our aim. These are high expectations of year 2….and a big jump from year 1…so we have really persevered this week. Next week we will deepen our understanding of time by learning about calculating and comparing durations of time. It will be vital that children know and can confidently apply the fact that there are 60 seconds to a minute and 60 minutes to an hour, as well as count in 5s to 60 fluently.

We are looking forward to our trip to Westpoint next week for the Big Bang science fair! We are also really enjoying sharing our next Roald Dahl story together, Matilda.

Keep the children thinking about time, using a clock face to practice working out the time at 5 minute intervals.

* Important Messages:

On Tuesday’s trip all children will need a packed lunch which we will eat once we have returned to school. They need to be in school uniform for the trip, wearing their school jumper or cardigan. Please send children with plenty to drink for the morning and with a small snack that they can eat (we will also be taking our school fruit snack).
